A note from the author, Anita Higman:

I grew up on a wheat farm in Oklahoma, and what we didn’t have in money I endeavored to make up for with a vigorous and slightly fantastical imagination . I learned to find intrigue and amusement in humble places and simple things—like raising tadpoles, making ice cream out of snow, gathering buttercups, creating three-tiered wedding cakes out of mud, dreaming in my treehouse, catching a “mess of fish” for supper, chasing lightning bugs, and pretending that our one-hundred-year-old farmhouse had stories to tell and secrets to hide. There was always something to pour myself into back then, and now, well, I love to pour myself into my writing . I hope you are delighted and challenged and inspired by these devotions that have not only farmhouse flair but Southern style .

In our modern society, we are far better at whirling than moseying. We don’t take enough time for pausing, resting, pondering, praying, or just being. We stay in a power mode: industrious, fidgeting, and ever harried. We can’t seem to be still to enjoy a moment of true quiet without our cell phones and planners and gadgets. And in this endless busyness, we lose a valuable sense of who we are, what we were meant to be, and who God is. We lose sight of what is eternal and the Eternal One Himself. Filling our hours and days with nothing but busyness is a little like filling our stomachs with bowls of junk candy. Yes, it fills the space, but in the end, it isn’t truly satisfying.

Our spirits cry out for more. Much more. God says to be still at times. And in that quiet, He would like us to know that He is God, and He alone is worthy of “the knowing.” He is worthy of our time .

There is much for the Lord to say in the silence of our souls . Are we listening?

My Review:

This is a small book but impacted with a lot of wisdom. The very first devotion in it reminded me of my mom. It talked of hanging out clothes on a clothes line my mom did that the 54 years she was married to my dad. Even in the winter. I use to laugh and say she they were freeze dried. Looking back I can see all the time she spent dong for us with out any easy electronics to do the work. Even a wringer washer. Good honest work is never a waste it is a glory to God. My mom loves the Lord. Even today she lives in a assited living and she helps others there. She tries to make thins easier for others even if it is sharpening their pencils for them. God is still using my mom at 83 she is being a piece of sunshine in others lives. I look at myself am I being aray of sunshine for Him or am I falling through the cracks? I pray God uses me. The devotional "One Day at a Time Sweet Jesus " has 90 devo we can read and take a lesson from. This devo is well written by Anita Higman. I guarntee their are devotions in here that will touch you. I know many of them made me think.

I did receive a complimentary copy, but the review is all mine
